Setting an HP JetDirect Device in
Windows NT
Using Windows NT4.0
Using HP Web JetAdmin v6.x
Windows NT Printing
Note: Make sure your printer and JetDirect device are turned
on and connected to the network before setting up NT printing.
Using Windows NT4.0
1. Install the DLC protocol on the server (or workstation)
that you will create the logical printers on. Until you install
the DLC Protocol, you will not see the necessary Hewlett Packard
Network Port in the Add Printer wizard. Installing the DLC protocol
requires a reboot, and you should probably reapply your latest service
pack. To install the DLC protocol right click Network Neighborhood,
click the Protocols tab, click Add, select DLC from the list, click
OK.
2. After the reboot, click Start|Settings|Printers
3. Double click Add Printer|select My Computer| Click Next.
(This will start the process of creating a logical printer.)
4. Now you must associate a logical printer with a Port.
This dialog box allows you to do this. To find the Hewlett Packard
Network Port click Add Port, and choose the Hewlett Packard Network
Port. Click New Port and type in a name, "JetAdmin01"
is good. Click the refresh button and choose the Hardware Address
of the JetDirect device your printer is connected to. Click OK,
then Close, then Next.
5. You will now select the type of physical printer connected
to the JetDirect device
so the printer drivers can be installed. If you have new drivers,
click Have Disk
and point the dialog box to the location of the drivers. Choose
your driver and
click Next.
6. Give your Logical Printer a name, click Next
7. Since this is going to be a network accessible printer,
click the Shared radio button, and type in a Shared name. If you
want to allow Win9x computers to use Point and Print, click Windows
95. Click Next.
Note: In order to use Point and Print for Win9x or other
Operating Systems (Windows NT Operating systems not included because
they use the drivers you just installed on the server) you need
to copy the drivers for that OS and your printer type to a directory
on the server.
For example, if the printer you are setting up is a HP LaserJet
1100, and you want Win9x PCs to be able to use Point and Print from
the Win NT server, you would create a directory on your server and
copy the Win9x HP LaserJet 1100 driver files into that directory.
Once you click Next, the drivers for Windows NT will be copied,
and then you will see a dialog box asking for the location of the
.inf file for the Windows 95 drivers. Point to the directory you
copied your Win9x driver files into, and click OK.
Your logical printer will be created and a test page should print
out.
Using Web JetAdmin
HP Web JetAdmin has become HP's preferred software for managing
JetDirect devices. HP Web JetAdmin is a Java application that uses
a browser interface. HP's JetAdmin, the Windows application, is
no longer being developed or supported so you should use Web JetAdmin.
These steps are not intended as a replacement for the Web JetAdmin
documentation. You will need to familiarize yourself with the software.
1. Install Web JetAdmin on a PC or Server. Once you install
Web JetAdmin and open it the first time, you will see a page asking
to discover the devices on your network. Click Continue to discover
the devices, or Edit to configure how the discovery will run.
2. You will then be taken through a couple of pages describing
Web JetAdmin.
3. Next you will be shown a Devices page showing your JetDirect
devices and printers. If you don't see the devices list, move your
mouse to the upper left of the page and click the "Go"
button.
Note: If you have a large network or a large number of HP
devices, it might take a while to discover everything. You can check
the discovery status by looking at the middle, bottom of the web
page. It will have a discovery status that says either "Discovery
in Progress" or "Last Discovery Completed".
4. To create a Logical Printer on a NT Server, highlight
the JetDirect device and it's printer you want to print to in the
devices list, and click the "Open Device" button on the
right side of the web page.
(These steps replace the process of running the Add Printer Wizard
in Windows NT.)
5. In the web page that comes up, click the "Install"
button on the button bar. On the next page, choose "Windows"
and then the "Continue" button. The next page allows to
choose the Domain and Computer name where you want to create the
Logical Printer. Choose the names and click "Continue".
6. The next page allows you to assign a Printer Name, a
Share Name, a Port Name, and select the driver… just like you
would do with the Add Printer wizard in Windows NT. Do this and
Click the "Create Printer" button.
7. You will then see a page asking you to enter a username
and password that will allow you to create a Logical Printer on
the target computer. The group Power Users will be above the username
and password fields, ignore this. Just enter a valid name and password
that has the proper rights. Your new Logical Printer will be created.
8. Go to your NT server and open the Printers applet to
verify the new Printer was added. Print a test page.
Note: When using Web JetAdmin you do not need to install
the DLC protocol on the target computer. Web JetAdmin will use TCP/IP
to communicate with the JetDirect device. The type of port that
will be created on the target computer is a HP Standard TCP/IP port.
Windows NT Printing
1. A logical printer is created using the Add Printer Wizard.
This is called a "Printer" by Microsoft.
2. The logical printer must be associated with a port. The
port can be a local LPT port (parallel ports) or a local Com port
(serial ports), or you can add a port like you do with a network
attached print device (HP JetDirect device). This is also done in
the Add Printer wizard.
3. Your physical printer is connected to the port you defined
in the Add Printer wizard (parallel port, Com port or a network
attached print device), and this is how NT knows where to send the
print jobs. Microsoft calls a physical printer a "Print Device"
4. A "Print Server" is the computer where the logical
printers are created and the print jobs are spooled to (or saved
on) before printing. Normally, in a networked environment, a Windows
NT Server is the Print Server. This server is where you create your
logical printers.
5. The Print Jobs are stored in the Print Spooler before
being sent to the "Print Device". The Print Spooler is
located under Winnt\System32\Spooler\Printers.
This directory is where all print jobs go before being printed (unless
you print directly to the port). The Print Spooler location can
be moved by opening the Printers Control Panel applet, choosing
the logical printer, clicking File|Server Properties| and the Advanced
tab.
In order for there to be room for all the print jobs that might
be sent to the Print Spooler, make sure you have ample disk space
on the drive where you create your Print Spooler. In addition, make
sure your print server has ample RAM (memory) to handle the printing
load.
6. If you change the IP address of your JetDirect device
you must update the port your logical printer is using to reflect
this change.
